GRP Fibreglass

GRP (glass reinforced polyester) is a rigid fibreglass laminate applied in liquid form and cured in situ on the roof deck. The key advantage is that it forms a completely seamless single membrane — there are no joints, seams or laps to fail. Every flat roof failure we are called to repair on Oxford's extension and garage stock is either a felt roof reaching end of life, or a GRP or felt roof with failed seams, laps or upstand junctions. A correctly applied GRP roof eliminates all of these failure points.

The main limitation of GRP is thermal movement on very large roof areas. Above approximately 60–80m2, the differential thermal expansion of a rigid fibreglass membrane can stress the upstand junctions over time. On Oxford's standard rear extension footprints (typically 15–40m2), this is not a relevant concern.

EPDM Rubber

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a flexible synthetic rubber membrane bonded to the roof deck as a single sheet (or with a small number of factory-welded joints on larger areas). It has excellent flexibility and handles thermal movement better than GRP, making it the preferred material for very large flat roof areas.

EPDM’s main limitation is that the membrane is bonded to the deck at the perimeter and at regular intervals across the surface — it’s not a rigid continuous bond. This means the seams and bonded areas remain the primary risk points over time, though a quality installation with correct bonding technique is highly durable.

Which Should You Choose?

For most Oxford extension and garage flat roofs (under 50m2): GRP fibreglass. The seamless nature eliminates the main failure mode, the 25-year warranty gives genuine peace of mind, and the rigid surface handles foot traffic for maintenance access far better than EPDM.
